Presidents Report

Notes from Doren Miller, MTA President

As I am trying to put my thoughts together, we are headed to District 6 with Robbie Page and Dale Verts for a Fall Rendezvous planning meeting.  There has been a lot going on since the last Mountain Man.  In my last report I wrote about being on the offense instead of the defense.  At the first auction the Columbia Tribune came in and asked questions.  We were on the front page the next day.  It was a very positive report.  I think our auctions went real well thanks to Jim Weberry and the committee.  There were a few riffles but they handled it very well.  Fur prices were a whole lot better than we thought they were going to be.

Feb. 20th we were at District 6 for their well attended spring meeting.  The things discussed at the meeting were mainly the Fall Rendezvous at the Missouri Trapshooters Association.  Dale and his guys have many things planned and like always at a Fall Rendezvous we try new stuff.  I'm sure Robbie and Dale have more in their reports on this meeting and stuff for the Fall Rendezvous.

Feb 25-27th we were at the Conservation Federation of MO meeting at the Lodge of the Four Seasons.  I was fortunate to be able to visit a little with the new MO Department of Conservation Director, Bob Ziehmer and also with the Executive Director of CFM, Dave Murphy.  I attended several meetings; wetlands, the Conservation Leadership Corp, and small game.   Thanks to Ken Drenon, not only for writing and helping to pass the resolution, but also for chairing the small games committee on short notice.  Look at Ken's report on the Resolution passed at CFM.

Also on Feb. 27th we ended up at District 9's fundraising banquet.  That was very well attended at I know there were several dollars raised for the district.  Many thanks need to go to Kenny Wells and Greg Stephens, Randy Adey, Dwight Holman, Hank Wendt and that is just to name a few.  There was a whole lot of work and District 9 members involved to make it a success.

The first weekend of March we stayed home and worked fur.  The first weekend in March we had to stay home and work fur.  Second weekend in March I went to the NTA Leadership Conference in Bloomington IL with the NTA Director, Ron Pantry.  They discussed a variety of opportunities and things that could be implemented within the state organizations to offensively promote trapping and education in our state.  We got to visit with several other NTA Directors to understand some of the stuff that is working for them in their state.  One of the things that Ron and I will be asking for from you when you do clinics and outdoor days with the MDC, teaching and promoting trapping, is to jot down a word or two and send it to Ron.   He needs dates, the number of participants, were they school kids or mainly adults - who was your audience?  Was it trappers or educating public on trapping?  Send that info to Ron, he can take it back to the NTA.  They want to build literature and make it available to the states to promote trapping education.

On March 20th the MTA Spring Meeting was held in District 7 in Boonville with 8' of snow.  Everyone got home safely.  I definitely want to thank everyone who attended in the adverse conditions.  Some of the things we discussed were:  the fur auction committee recommended and it was passed to keep the $0.25 per pelt fee.   I was asked by the Board to appoint a committee to look into building our own building for some of the activities and meetings we have.  Arlon Held volunteered to chair the committee.  It is a large endeavor.  I'm sure he will have more in future reports.  We voted to send $500 to the FTA for the Advantage Management spots on the Outdoor channel.  It was voted to sponsor part of the tuition to FTA college for Elizabeth Ball if she is accepted to the college.  There were several different issues on the rules and regulations discussed.  One of the things we passed was to ask the MDC for an additional 15 days after close of the regular season to have fur sold.  I'm sure Rick Friedrich will have more on these issues in his Conservation report.

Thanks to Karin Reed for her work on the website and for getting it started.  In the short time 9000+ people have checked it.  Paula and Marc Evans are the new webmasters.  They would like pictures, articles, news, ect.  You can reach them at webmaster@missouritrappersassociation.org  and the MTA website is www.missouritrappersassociation.org.  We all need to try to utilize the website more on upcoming events because even I, an illiterate internet person, admit there are a lot of positive things we are going to be able to do in the future.

The next weekend Lynn and I didn't have to drive far for the District 2 meeting, it was at our place.  Unfortunately Tom Westhoff wasn't able to be there due to the passing of his mother in law.  We extend our condolences to him and his wife for their loss.  Thanks to Gene Whyte for stepping in.  We had a good turn out.  I think we all learned something.  Thanks to Lara and Cody and Ben and Charlie Brown, Danny Myers and all the other guys standing around, teaching and tell their experiences.  I am honored to have so many people from District 2 at the shop for a meeting.

We were kind of in a dilemma as to where I could be the most help the 1st weekend in April.  Tom Westhoff, District 2 had a booth with Ducks Unlimited in St. Charles.  Fortunately a couple of guys volunteered to man the booth.  District 3 had their spring meeting.  I talked to Jim Love, he was a little disappointed in the turn out, but had a good meeting and things moved forward.  Lynn and I went to District 8 spring meeting in Albany where several things were discussed; their fall clinic and the 2011 Fall Rendezvous.  District 8 has seen a lot of growth in the past few years and they are utilizing some of their potential in that part of the state.  Because of the leadership in their district I see great things happening for trapping all across Missouri.

We are fortunate to have so many volunteers across the state.  They drive countless miles and spend countless hours in their counties, districts, communities making a difference for the seemingly endless challenge of educating clubs, schools, kids, families on utilizing some of our abundant resources.  For all of these volunteers, a simple thanks is not enough, but most of the time is all that is required.

These are a few of the things I plan to attend over the next few months.

Vice Presidents Report

Hi everyone,

Well, it is continuing to be a wet summer. At the time of this writing, here in central Missouri, we are having a major thunderstorm. This morning we got dumped with another three inches in twenty minutes and here we are getting another hit this evening. There is still a lot of water everywhere in the river bottoms. The only good thing about it is that the beaver and muskrat trapping should be good this fall.

Speaking of fall, the Fall Rendezvous should be a good one in Linn Creek. Dale Verts and I still have a few things to iron out, but the rendezvous should go off without a hitch. Dale has a great bunch of people down there in District #6. They are a dedicated and hard working bunch of people. They are all willing to do whatever it takes to pull this thing off. My hat goes off to Dale for staying on top of everything considering his health. He seems to be doing well and recovering just fine since his stroke. We are having another Rendezvous meeting on August 14th at the Trapshooters Association grounds in Linn Creek. After that, everything should be etched in stone. Just log on to our website at www.missouritrappersassociation.org for updates on the event.

Several things are going to start happening in the association in the upcoming months. We recently just had a summer meeting in Billingsville near Boonville, Missouri. Most of the details I'm sure Doren will have in his Presidents report. So be sure to read his report so that you can get informed on what all is going on. On August 7th I will be helping represent the Missouri Trappers Association and District #2 in Fayette at Central Missouri University. The Boy Scouts are having an outdoor day that Saturday. It is supposed to be a big event with 1500 to 2000 youngsters there. On October 8th and 9th District #1 will be having a trapping clinic. For details, contact Jennifer Pantry at 660-457-2192. On October 16th and 17th, District #7 will be having a trapping clinic in conjunction with the Missouri Department of Conservation and U.S. Fish and Wildlife at the Swan Lake Wildlife Refuge. For more information contact Keith Donaldson at 660-527-9379 or Clay Creech at 660-288-3127. On October 23rd and 24th, District #2 will be having a trapping clinic in Williamsburg at the Whetstone Wildlife Area. For more information, contact Tom Westhoff at 573-289-0242. The fur auctions for the 2010-2011 will January 29th and February 12th. Both auctions will be in Columbia at the Boone County Fairgrounds in the front portion of the building. For more information, contact Jim Weberry at 573-543-2130.

Well that is all that I have to report for now. If anyone has any questions or needs anything feel free to give me a call. I look forward to seeing you all at the rendezvous.

Robbie

Treasurer Report

Hi everyone.  Spring is finally here and we are working in the garden and yard.  So we can get ready for crappie fishing and trout lining on the lake,  District #6 had had two meetings about the fall rondy.  Robbie and Dale have got things rolling real good.  We are going to need a lot of help so if you can pitch in and help a little or a lot we would appreciate it.  Give Robbie or Dale a call.  I think both of these guys will have more in their articles.

Well my boat is ready and the fish are calling so it is time to go.  Till next time be safe and don't eat to many fish or mushrooms.

                           God Bless

                             Paul

Conservation Directors Report

Hello fellow trappers.  Hope your summer is going good and safe.  It is just about over and about time to get the traps ready to go.  But there is still plenty to do this summer, if you can stand the heat.

We are getting ready for the National Trappers Convention in Wisconsin.  We are hoping to see a few Missouri trappers there.  I will have a full report for everyone at the fall meeting.  And speaking of National Trappers Convention, I still need volunteers for chairmen of a few activities, such as trap setting contests, the He-Man canoe race and children activities.  Please give me a call if you think you can handle an activity.  I am also accepting ideas for a slogan.  Please put it on paper and have it to me by the fall meeting.

On the Rules and Regulations.  We will have some new laws going into affect this year.  They are:  the removal of zones for otter and the season will run until Feb 20th.  The other change this year is the cable restraint license being eliminated.  This will not be a separate license anymore.  It will be included in your trapper's license.  BUT, you will still have to take the class to be certified.

On July 7th the Rules and Regulation committee of the MDC met again.  There was a lot of discussion on the holding of fur after season.  What the committee decided and voted on was to do away with the sale date and the fur handler's permit.  What this means is you will be able to hold your fur for as long as you like.  But you still need to get your bobcat and otter tagged within 15 days of close of season.  Although the Rules & Regs committee voted and approved this decision it still has to be looked at by the commissioners and approved.  If so, it will not go into effect until the 2011-2012 season.  If anyone else would like to see some changes, please put them in writing so we may approach the department regarding them.

The summer meeting at Billingsville went very well.  A majority of officers attended.  Looks like October will be a very busy month.  Every weekend has a trapper's clinic of some sort somewhere in Missouri.  I hope to make them all, but might not be able to.  Will see how things go and with luck I will be at all of them.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the fall meeting n Linn Creek with District Six.  I am sure that it will be a really good convention with Robbie Page and Dale Verts being in charge.  I know that it is hard to think about a fall rondy with it being 100 degrees outside.  But it will be here sooner than you think.  I guess this is all I have for now....hoping that the rest of summer for you and your family is safe and fun

Rick Freidrich, Conservation Director

Way's and Mean's Report

Hello to all hope your spring has gone well with plenty of crappie, turkey, and mushroom's. As you read this we will have spent a month or so fishing for big flathead's and hopefully have caught a few.

My report ran late last time so there wasn't much of an introduction on my behalf. Some of you know me and several of you most likely don't. My name of course is Troy McDaniel I live in Hillsboro, MO I have been married to my wife Michelle for the last 10 year's and we have a son named Trace that is 10. We all trap, hunt, and fish together and sometimes I have to wonder who's teaching who LOL!

Well enough of the personal info for now and on to business at hand. As you saw in the last MM we have purchased a nice list of gun's for our fundraiser again this year and here is a brief rundown on that. We spent a total of $3215.22 on the gun's we bought. We have attended only one event so far which was the Missouri Deer Classic in Columbia and sold right at $900 dollar's worth of ticket's you could sure tell that money's tight with folk's this year but I felt we still did alright. I am asking that if you have an event that you would like to have the gun's at please contact me and we will get them there. Also I am asking for help at the National event's in Indiana and Wisconsin this year just an hour or two of your time would be greatly appreciated so if your at one of these event's and would like to set a spell for who ever' selling the ticket's so they can take in some of the sight's or grab a bite or drink STOP BY!! For any of you that would like some ticket's to sell just get me your address and I will send you some we can use all the help we can get to help out our Association!

NTA Director Report

I hope that everyone is having a good summer and is getting all the rain and moisture that they need. I would sure like to share some of what we have been getting with you guys that are a little dry. As I am doing my report today we got drenched last night with over six inches of rain. Yesterday we had an inch and a half and the day before that we had an inch and a quarter. The bridge at the bottom of the hill was under water.  After the water receded, we discovered that most of the dirt that was behind the wing walls had washed away. The road had about ten feet cut out of it right next to the bridge piers. Past our house the road turns to clay, so I got to stay home today.

If any of you have never been to a Fall Rendezvous, you really need to put attending one high on your priority list. It is a great experience to enjoy fellowship with so many good people that share some of our same interests. Lifetime memories are made and great friendships are made with fellow trappers. It is also your way to get involved with the decision making process of our association. The Fall General Meeting, which is always held on Saturday afternoon, is where most of the decisions are made that affect the path our association travels down. We need everyone to try and get more involved if they can. From everything that I have heard, we are going to have a very nice fall convention. It sounds like there is going to be a lot of different demos and activities for all to enjoy.

There has been another great opportunity present itself that is too good to pass up. The NTA was contacted by Alan Probst with an opportunity to act as one of the sponsors for a special, all trapping series called F&T’s North American Trapper. Alan currently hosts the show, All Outdoors, and it is available in more than 28 million households across the country. This is not a two-minute segment on trapping, but the entire show. Thirteen half hour shows and 65 reruns are guaranteed. This would equal 2,340 minutes of all trapping. The show would promote trapping in a positive manner and the NTA would be given specific advertising spots presented by Alan. The sponsorship will be offered to the NTA at a discounted price and would equate to about $6.41 per minute. Fur Bearers Unlimited has agreed to provide a grant to get this project started. The total for our sponsorship is $15,000.  There are also several other generous sponsors for this program.  We will be updating all of you very soon with the progress. Alan does an extremely good job with his programming and we look forward to working with him on this.

The show will be broadcast on the “In Country Television” channel, which can be found on basic subscription packages on DirecTV channel 344 and Dish Network channel 230. “F&T’s North American Trapper” will air every Wednesday at 6 p.m. EST and every Thursday at 11 p.m. EST. There will be 13 episodes in the first season, which will run through the end of September with rebroadcasts through December.  Jim Spencer, Charles Probst, Johnny Thorpe, Mark June, Tera Roach, John Graham, Mike Gurski, Kirk DeKalb and Brad Harris will be among those featured in the first season.

The show will also be available for viewing after television airings on "North American Trapper's" website at www.NATrapper.com. The website will launch on or about July 15 and will also feature various other clips and merchandise. It's a great program for trappers of all ages and skill levels.

The Maine lawsuit is into the next stages. Each side has filed all the briefs and comments to the other side’s briefs. We are now waiting for information from the court regarding oral arguments, the dates for these oral arguments, and also how many people the court will allow to speak from each side.  We will keep you informed.

For many years the NTA has worked tirelessly forming and building relationships that provide the best method to defend trapping across the USA. It is these various alliances and affiliations that provide the NTA with the connections required to apply the proper amounts of pressure when most needed. The NTA Executive Council, at the annual EC meeting in Vegas, voted to affiliate with the National Assembly of Sportsmen’s Caucuses (NASC). This group is made up of state legislatures from 38 different states. They are continuously working to increase this number. This gives the NTA and our affiliates direct connections to the legislators and various sportsman caucuses within that state and have a voice strong enough to be heard. We have already recognized the importance of these connections with the bill introduced in New Hampshire last winter. The NASC connection was on our side, familiar with the New Hampshire Trappers Association and worked diligently to a successful outcome for trappers. We will be having a presentation from NASC at the NTA Board of Directors meeting in Marshfield this year.

Our affiliations and involvements with other organizations or groups are only of benefit if we have the opportunity to utilize them as they are intended. We are completely dependent upon our affiliates to inform us when they have a situation that they are dealing with. It is the policy of the NTA to not force ourselves upon our affiliates nor try to circumvent their efforts. Over the last several months the NTA has had communications with many different individuals informing us of concerns they have about legislation or various meetings that may impact trapping. The NTA always forwards these concerns on to the state affiliate and provide these concerned individuals with contact information. The NTA will not act based upon the call of an individual without the affiliate support. We simply cannot function in this manner.  The NTA needs to have the affiliates contact us when things are going on; we have many tools through our associations that will help.  The more positive connections we have from more angles, the better and more successful we will be. So please keep the NTA informed so we will be better prepared and capable of providing assistance.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has partnered with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to produce a public service announcement “don’t touch baby animals”. This PSA asks the public to not touch baby animals if they happen to be found. It is not uncommon for the mothers to leave the young unattended to feed and that removing the animal from its natural habitat could have adverse affects and may actually cause the young to die. So The DNR chose to partner with HSUS, and HSUS actually participated in the writing of the PSA, according to reports. The Wisconsin Trappers Association along with the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation is extremely upset with this decision. The NTA stands with the Wisconsin Trappers Association and has joined in on writing letters and informing the WDNR that we are opposed to this sort of relationship. There are many reasons, but we need only look to the last few months where HSUS named WDNR, along with other Great Lakes state agencies, in a lawsuit to prevent the managing of the expanding wolf populations. It has been proven over and over that the animal rights groups are hypocrites and that such a partnership adds credibility to their overall cause. The different sportsmen groups in Wisconsin have had a pretty good working relationship with their DNR over the years. This relationship has been one the NTA has mentioned and used as an example in the past, of how things could be with a state agency. The fact that the WDNR didn’t contact its usual partners is very disturbing. As I’m writing this the NTA, WTA, FTA and others are strategizing a further course of action. This is not over and we will continue to stand with the WTA. Some points to consider; the NTA will not cancel the National Convention in Marshfield, WI, as this would only serve to harm our affiliate. The WDNR will have a booth, as is common practice at the Nationals. This will give trappers a place to voice their opinion directly to DNR personnel. Even though those present may not have been involved with the decision they will take the message back to the proper individuals. The NTA will be offering WDNR personnel the opportunity to directly address the Executive Council and also the Board of Directors during the meetings at the Nationals.

The NTA has received sad news that Past President, Vice President, Regional Director, and Affiliate Director, Steve Fitzwater is suffering from a terminal disease. This disease is a form of dementia. He has lost his ability to speak and related functions of his throat, and many of his motor skills. He has not been able to work and his insurance is about to run out. There are some immediate needs to make changes in his home allowing for ease in his care and accessing the bathroom.  Steve served as President from 2004 - 2006 when he was forced to give up his Presidency because of work related issues.  Steve was always a straight shooter, with a quick wit, and always sought to protect and provide protection for traps, trapping, and trappers.

The NTA has started a benefit fund for Steve’s family to help them deal with his physical condition. Please find it in your heart to provide some assistance. Please send all contributions to the NTA Office at 2815 Washington Ave, Bedford, IN 47421. Make checks payable to the NTA and include in the Memo portion, Steve Fitzwater. The NTA is obligated by law to then forward all proceeds to his family on his behalf.

I hope to see everyone at the Fall Rendezvous at the Missouri Trapshooters Association grounds near Linn Creek in District 6. The NTA Convention at Marshfield, WI will be history when this comes out. I would like to close with a request that you join the National Trappers Association, if you can. By joining you will further equip the NTA in the fight for traps, trappers, and trapping. Thank you,

___Ron Pantry.

District 1 Director Report

Greetings from District 1.

The turkeys are gobbling and the rain is pouring, but the grass is green. The Evening With Wildlife at Edina was a big success, there were 497 people present at last count. Miss Missouri Tara Ossick was our guest and was a big hit as were Mike Morford and Robert Waddells mountain lion mounts and rugs. The MDC personnel were very welcoming and thanked us for our presence. Our Spring meeting date is Saturday, June 5 at 5:00 pm. I havent found a location yet because I would like to have a central location. I will send postcards closer to the date. Business to be discussed will include the Fall Trapping Clinic and a fundraiser for the district. One thing I would like all our members to do is bring me or send me the name and mailing address of your local newspapers. This will help me put in articles about upcoming events so that other members of the public can be informed and maybe we can get some new members.

On another note if you have not heard about the Puppy Mill Cruelty Act you really need to read it and realize that although it says it targets puppy mills it also has wording in the last line that opens it up to controlling other livestock. This is a direct attack against animal agriculture in Missouri. As trappers we worry constantly about our rights but now Missouris number 1 industry is being attacked by HSUS and we all know that once the Animal Rights Activists get their foot in the door they dont stop. Please inform your friends and everyone that you know that this bill is detrimental to agriculture and to us as trappers and true environmentalists.

These are some upcoming events we have planned for District 1 this year, we will have more detailed information when the events get closer.

District 5 Director Report

The annual spring meeting was held March 20, 2010 at the Cooper County Fairgrounds near Booneville, Missouri. Amazingly, due to very severe ice and snow conditions, nearly all the officers were present and several members.  As of March 20, 2010 the Missouri Trappers Association has 1,230 members according to our Secretary, Charlie Brown.  And speaking of Charlie, you need to know that he along with the other elected officers are doing an outstanding job! If anyone is still having issues with the Trapper subscription, please let me know.

The audit of the treasurer’s records has shown that Paul Webb has stepped in, and with the support of this organization, resulted in a great report. Paul will be the first to tell you that he couldn’t do the job without the support of the officer’s and directors, but most importantly his wonderful wife, Elaine.  As the saying goes, behind every good man, is a great wife.  Thank you both for being a positive asset to the Missouri Trappers Association.

I would also like to remind everyone that it takes the support of everyone to make an association work.  I had the recent privilege in working with our Public Relations representative Karl Rice.  I requested several items and handout material from a member, for a program involving abused children. Karl had mailed the literature directly to the member and the program was a success.  I urge everyone, in this day and age to get involved in positive public relations. We are not only being judged as a trapping association by the public, but also the mere privilege of the subject of trapping.  That’s why public relations are so important.  We don’t have to compromise our beliefs or heritage; however, we must present ourselves in a humble and professional manner.  The Missouri Trappers Association is the future of trapping. Listed below are a few items brought up at the meeting.

The Missouri Department of Conservation has an upcoming proposal to extend the Fur Handler Permit one year after June 1.  The fur must be completely finished.  Remember this is only a proposal and will go before the MDC.  I will keep you posted on the outcome.

According to Ron Pantry out NTA representative, the NTA will hold its 51st annual convention August 1-7, 2011 at the Boone County fairgrounds in Columbia, Missouri. The MTA will need help in assisting with the organization of this event.  If anyone would like to help please let me know. The NTA has been very busy in preserving not only our rights, but every trapper’s rights throughout the Unites States.

The MTA fur auction was a success, even with the fur market projections.  The total amount of monetary proceeds taken in was $3,534.50. Again, everyone as an association makes this auction a success in more ways than one.

The firearms have been purchased for the raffle. You will be receiving the raffle tickets for distribution.

I’ sure I probably inadvertently forgot something. Just remember to be a positive and humble mentor to those you come into contact with.  May God bless you and your families.

R. Steven Crain, District 5 director.

District 6 Director Report / Convention Update

I'd like to take a moment to thank everyone who has expressed their concerns about me and my condition after my recent stroke. I'm fine and dandy, and expected to make a full recovery. I cannot put into words the appreciation that myself and my family have for all the cards and letters we've received. Missouri trappers are the greatest!

I'd also like to stress to all you hard-headed Hillbillies (like me) how important it is to keep yourselves up-to-date on your medical needs. I didn't, because I felt "fine". Until I had a stroke. An occasional visit to the doctor would have spared me and my family a lot of grief. Don't be a tough guy, get that system checked out once in a while.

God got my attention this time for sure, and I got off lucky. Thanks again to you all.
